Biography
Maria Judite de Carvalho was born in 1921 in Lisbon. By the time she was three months old, she was being brought up by her paternal uncle and aunt in an austere atmosphere. She studied Germanic philology at the University of Lisbon where she met Urbano Tavares Rodrigues who would also become a celebrated writer. They married in 1949 and started married life in Montpellier in France, where Tavares Rodrigues was teaching.They later moved to Paris, where they got to know fellow writers such as Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir. In 1955, they returned to Lisbon, where de Carvalho would remain for the rest of her life.
She initially wrote stories and articles in the press and had critical success with her first collection of stories. She mainly wrote stories but did write one novel, which has been translated into English. She died of cancer in 1998. Her husband lived to 2013.
