Biography

Valter hugo mãe was born Valter Hugo Lemos in Henrique de Carvalho (now Saurimo), Angola in 1971. Note that he writes his name and his book titles in lower case. He grew up in Paços de Ferreira and Vila do Conde, both near Porto. He studied law and then did post-graduate studies in Portuguese literature. He co-founded the publishing house Quasi Edições. As well as writing poetry, children’s books and novels, he has been both a professional singer, singing with the group Governo) and artist. He came to attention when José Saramago called his first novel, o remorso de baltazar serapião [The Remorse of Baltazar Serapião] a literary tsunami.
