Dino Buzzati
Biography
Dino Buzzati was born in Belluno in 1906. His family were well-to-do. His father was a professor of law in Milan and the family alternated between Milan and Belluno. Buzzati studied law but then opted for a career in journalism, spending most of his career working for the Corriere della Sera, which he joined after his military service. Though he started worked as a journalist soon after Mussolini came to power, Buzzati kept out of politics, often looking to abroad for his inspiration. He travelled as a journalist, including to Eritrea soon after the Italians has conquered it. The Eritrean desert was to be the inspiration for the desert in Il deserto dei Tartari (The Tartar Steppe), his best-known work. He lived most of his life with his mother and only married after she died, when he was already sixty. He did not follow trends, ignoring the literary experiments after the War and continue to publish in his style. As well as novels and stories, he also wrote poetry, opera librettos and plays, and painted. He died of cancer in 1972.
