Mathias Storch
Biography
Mathias Storch was born in 1883 in Manermiut, Greenland. His father was a seal hunter. Storch studied theology in the seminary at Nuuk and then in Denmark. He was ordained as a priest in 1910. He subsequently became a deacon and then had responsibility for the school system in Northern Greenland. He worked hard for the rights of Greenlanders and was involved in various discussions and activities in this area. Though he retired in 1953, he continued occasional work as a priest in his later years. He died in 1957. He will be remembered for publishing the first novel by a native Greenlander in the local language.
