Biography
Stratis Myrivilis (real name Efstratios Stamatopoulos) was born in 1890 in the village of Sykaminea on the north coast of the island of Lesbos (then part of the Ottoman Empire). He went to study in Mytilene and then became a village schoolnaster. He gave that up after a year and went to the University of Athens to study law. He fought twice in the Balkan Wars and was twice shot in the leg. After the war he returned to Lesbos, now part of Greece and became a columnist and writer. he wrote poetry and fiction. He later fought in World War I and wrote a novel about his experiences. He moved to Athens, where he became a newspaper editor nd later General Programme Director for the Greek National Broadcasting Institute. Four of his novels have been published in English as well as two stories in anthologies. He died in 1969.
