Pandelis Prevelakis

Biography

Pandelis Prevelakis was born in 1909 in Rethymno, Crete. When fifteen, he published a local literary magazine He enrolled in the Law School of the University of Athens. He would later transfer to the School of Philosophy. He would even later go to Paris where he enrolled in the Literature Faculty.

In Athens he met Nikos Kazantzakis and they became lifelong friends. After national service, he took up writing and also held various posts in the artistic world. During the war, he was appointed by the Ministry of Education, chairman of committees concerned with the preservation of Greece’s works of art. After the war he was involved in teaching, publishing and writing. He wrote several well-received novels, three of which have been translated into English. he also wrote poetry and stage plays. He died in 1986.
