Alki Zei

Biography

Alki Zei was born in 1923 in Athens. Her father worked in a bank. She spent some time in Samos while her mother was recovering from tuberculosis.The family returned to Athens where she was educated in private schools. Her maternal uncle married the writer Dido Sotiriou who helped Zei with her writing.She got involved in puppet theatre at school and wrote plays for the puppet theatre. She studied drama and philosophy at the University of Athens. She met her future husband, the playwright Giorgos Sevastikoglou , there. He fled to Tashkent after the defeat of the Democratic Army in the civil war. She tried to follow him but was arrested and sent to Chios. She managed to get away after six years and joined her husband in Tashkent. They moved to Moscow, where she studied scriptwriting.She wrote a lot while in the Soviet Union, including many children’s stories. She later moved to Paris where she continued her writing. She wrote many chilren’s works as well as adult fiction, some of which have been published in English. She died in 2020.
