Biography
Ghazaleh Alizadeh was born Fatemeh Alizadeh in 1947 inMashad. her father was a wealthy merchant and her mother a poet and a fiction writer. She was an only child. Her childhood was not happy as her parents frequently quarrelled and talked of divorce. As a child she was introverted and suffered from depression. She took a BA in Political Sciences from Tehran University before moving to France to study philosophy and cinema at the Sorbonne University. She had planned to study law but switched to Illuminationism. She abandoned her studies after the death of her father and returned to Tehran. She started writing stories. Her influences were both from Persian literature, including mysticism as well as French literature, particularly Flaubert. She wrote novels and stories. She was twice married and had a daughter from her first marriage, She also adopted two daughters who were survivors of the 1962 Buin Zahra earthquake. She contracted cancer and after two unsuccessful attempts, killed herself in 1996.
