Biography
Bakhtiyar Ali (also written Bachtyar Ali and Bakhtyar Ali ) was born in Slemani (Sulaymaniyah) in 1960. He studied geology at the University of Sulaimani, and later Salah al-Din University in Arbil. He was wounded in a demonstration against Saddam Hussein’s Ba’th Party and soon after gave up his studies. He started writing both poetry and articles but only became prominent after 1991 when he wrote against the Iraqi government. He became part of a group that started a new intellectual movement in Kurdistan and published a journal called Azadi (= Freedom). He has gone on to publish poems and novels.
