Biography

Mukhtar Auezov was born in 1897 in Chingiz (now Abai). He studied at the Leningrad State University. Though he is only known in the English-speaking world for his novel Абай жолы (Abai) (actually two novels), he was best-known in the Soviet Union for his plays. He spent some time in prison in the 1930s for nationalist activities.
