Alaa al Aswany
Biography
Alaa al Aswany was born in 1957 in Cairo. His father was a novelist and lawyer who had an office in the Yacoubian building in Cairo. Al Aswany studied dentistry, first in Cairo and then in Chicago, and when he qualified, he too had an office in the Yacoubian building. While practicing dentistry, he was also writing and published three novels before the big success of عمارة يعقوبيان (The Yacoubian Building), which was also made into a successful film. As well as novels he has written short stories and also contributes articles to newspapers.
