Xavier Icaza
Biography
Xavier Icaza was born in Durango in 1892. He attended law school in Mexico City. He took an interest in literature through the magazine La Nave where he was involved in a group of like-minded writers. After a brief visit to the United States, he went to work as a lawyer for the oil company, El Aguila. After publishing a set of essays on Nietzsche, he published his first novel, Dilema. He later became involved with Stridentism, while living in Veracruz. He is best known for Panchito Chapopote, a novel about Mexico’s oil boom. After writing it, he then became involved in the labour movement and wrote less fiction. His work led to his being made a judge and he continued to write on politics and labour issues. He died in 1969.
