Laura Esquivel
Biography
Laura Esquivel was born in 1950 in Mexico City. Her father was a telegraph operator. She trained as a teacher and began to write while working as an elementary teacher, particularly in developing materials for children to perform. She moved on to children’s television and then screenwriting. She wrote a screenplay which was directed by her then husband, Alfonso Arau. This led them to collaborate on the film version of her novel Como agua para chocolate: novela de entregas mensuales con recetas, amores, y remedios caseros (Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments, with Recipes, Romances and Home Remedies), which was a world-wide success. She has continued to write novels but they have had not the same success as her first one.
