Manuel Rojas
Biography
Manuel Rojas was born in Buenos Aires of Chilean parents in 1896. The family briefly returned to Chile before going back to Argentina. He came to Chile when he was seventeen and did a variety of odd jobs, including linotype operator, railway worker, grape picker, electrician and theatre prompter. He eventually took up journalism, writing for Los Tiempos and Las últimas Noticias before turning to fiction, though his first published work was a poem, published in a literary review in 1917. His works tend to be autobiographical and are often based on his working life. He is best known for his novels with the autobiographical hero Aniceto Hevia. The first – Hijo de Ladrón (Born Guilty) – is by far the best. Sadly, they get progressively worse. Manuel Rojas died in 1973.
