Biography

José Oswald de Sousa de Andrade, was born in 1890 in São Paulo. His family was wealthy, which enabled him to travel extensively in Europe when he was still fairly young. He became aware of avant-garde literary movements. He studied law on his return to Brazil. He became an important figure in Brazilian modernism. He published the Manifesto da Poesia Pau-Brasil in 1924, the same year as Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto. It showed that Brazil had developed its own modernism and was no longer dependent on Portugal. It was followed by the Anthropophagic Manifesto, along similar lines but more political. (You can read the text in English here).

De Andrade became a communist but later left the party, after becoming disillusioned. He wrote novels, plays and poetry and financially supported several artists. He died in 1954. Two of his works have been translated into English, both long since out of print
