Juan Goytisolo
Biography
Juan Goytisolo was born in Barcelona in 1931. His father was on the Republican side during the Civil War, while his mother was killed in an attack by Franco’s forces on Barcelona in 1938. His father’s wealth came from his grandfather’s Cuban sugar plantation. He had a conventional education in religious schools. His first novel was published when he was only twenty-three. Soon after, he went into voluntary exile in France after his second novel was censored. His later works were banned in Spain till the death of Franco. While in France he married Monique Lange, a book editor. After her death in 1996, he moved to Marrakech. As well as novels, he has written travel works, many essays, including many political ones, journalism and memoirs. Much of his writing has been critical of the Franco regime. While he was initially a realist, his later work is more experimental, with little plot. He was the brother of the writer of Luis Goytisolo. He died in 2017.
