José María Gironella

Biography

José María Gironella was born in Darnius, Gerona in 1917. He was educated in a seminary and held various jobs, including working in chemist’s and in a bank. He fought in the Civil War on the nationalist (Franco) side, after escaping from Republican-held territory by fleeing to France and then going to San Sebastian. He has written memoirs, essays, short stories and travel literature but is best known for his Spanish Civil War tetralogy, generally known by the first book in the series – Los cipreses creen en Dios (The Cypresses Believe in God). He died in 2003.
