Biography

William Boyd was born in Accra, Ghana in 1955 to Scottish parents. His father was a doctor and his mother a teacher. He went to Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland, while his parents remained in Africa. He obtained a diploma in French studies at the University of Nice and then went to Glasgow University, where he got an M.A. in English and philosophy and then Jesus College, Oxford. He then taught English at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford before writing Stars and Bars, when he became a full-time writer. As well as writing novels and stories, he has also written screenplays, directed a film and written a radio play. His biography of the American artist, Nat Tate, was a hoax, based on the names of the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery.
