Kuvempu
Biography
Kuvempu was born Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa in 1904 in Hirekodige but his family soon moved to the village of Kuppalli in the Malenadu region of Karnataka. He studied at Mysore and taught Kannada at the university of Mysore and eventually became Vice-Chancellor of the University. Though best-known as a poet – he published over thirty works of poetry – he also wrote two epics novels – Kānūru heggadithi (The House of Kanooru) and Malegalalli Madumagalu [Bride of the Mountains], a famous verse epic based on the Ramayana and several plays. He died in 1994.
