Biography

Fríða Á. Sigurðardóttir was born on a remote farm in Hornstrandir in 1940. She was the twelfth of thirteen children. The family later moved to Keflavik, then a remote village but now the Reykjavik airport. She married young and had a child by the time she was nineteen but managed to continue her studies and worked a variety of jobs, before taking a B.A. from the University of Iceland in Icelandic studies and library science. While continuing to work – as a librarian and teacher – she continued her studies, later taking a master’s degree. She published articles on Icelandic literature, before publishing a collection of short stories. She continued to publish novels and short stories as well as translating from English and French, despite serious eye trouble. Only one of her novels has been translated into English. She died in 2010. Her sister, Jakobína, was also an accomplished novelist, though her works have not been translated into any language, except for Swedish.
