Biography
Anton Shammas was born in1950 in Fassuta. His father was Palestinian and his mother Lebanese. The family moved to Haifa in 1962. He studied English and Arabic literature and art history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He left Jerusalem in 1987 and now is a professor of Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan. He founded an Arabic magazine called East. He initially wrote poetry in Arabic but later wrote in Hebrew as well as translating Arabic works into Hebrew. He is best-known for his only novel ערבסקות, (Arabesques), which has been translated into English and several other languages but not Arabic.
