Raymond Queneau

Biography

Raymond Queneau was born in Le Havre in 1903. His parents were haberdashers. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. He was involved with the Surrealists and even married André Breton‘s sister-in-law but when he was expelled from the group in 1930, he participated in a pamphlet attacking Breton. He did various odd jobs, including journalism and translation before serving in the army during World War II. After the fall of France, he continued to work in journalism. He started writing fiction with his first novel, published in 1933 but it had little success. As well as surrealism, he was involved in other literary movements, including Pataphysics and Oulipo. He had his first literary success with Pierrot mon ami in 1942. However, he only achieved popular success with his novel Zazie dans le metro (Zazie), published in 1959 which was made into a successful film. As well as novels and stories, he published a variety of experimental works, poetry and essays and was also a painter. He died in 1976.
