Hiromi Ito
Biography
Hiromi Ito was born in 1955 in Tokyo. She studied at at the Literary School of the New Japanese Literary Society, where she helped launch a poetry magazine. She published her first collection of poetry in 1978, with poems often dealing with sex, reproduction, and death. She continued to publish poetry, revolutionising women’s poetry in Japan. She initially lived in Kumamoto City but, after her divorce, she moved to California in 1997 where she lived with her partner, the British artist
Harold Cohen, who died in 2016.Her move to the US had been partially prompted by her interest in Native American poetry and her meeting the poet Jerome Rothenberg. She started writing novellas but would later return to poetry. She now divides her time between California and Kumamoto City.
