Tom McCarthy

Biography

Tom McCarthy was born in 1969 in London. He read English literature at Oxford University. He then lived and worked abroad before returning to the UK to publish his first novel, which was published by a small press and distributed through museums and galleries. It was later picked up by a more mainstream publishers and received several good reviews, particularly by Zadie Smith. He has published two other novels and a work of literary criticism since then, which have received favourable reviews. He has been hailed as a major new post-modernist novelist. As well as writing, he has taught, for example on catastrophes, and has been General Secretary of the International Necronautical Society, an avant-garde group.
