Biography

Roland Camberton was born Henry Cohen in 1921 in Manchester. He served as a wireless mechanic in the RAF. He did various jobs, including translator, teacher and copywriter. His first book – The Scamp – was published in 1950 but was savaged in the Times Literary Supplement by Julian MacLaren-Ross, the model for X Trapnel in Anthony Powell‘s Dance to the Music of Time, who said that Camberton was devoid of any narrative gift, possibly because MacLaren-Ross appeared, barely disguised, in the novel. His second novel was better received. He then published nothing further. He did some journalism and worked as a film script reader. He apparently wrote a novel called Tango but it was never published and has disappeared. He died in 1965.
