Transgressive fiction
Transgressive fiction is fiction where the protagonist(s) feel constrained by society’s values and norms, and endeavour(s) to break free, ofen in illegal or socially unacceptable ways. They are sometimes mentally ill and often criminals by the standards of conventional society. Transgressive fiction is not new. The Marquis de Sade and the Comte de Lautréamont are two examples. More recent examples would include Lolita and A Clockwork Orange. The poster boys for transgressive fiction are probably Chuck Palahniuk and Brett Easton Ellis, though Kathy Acker and Irvine Welsh are two other obvious examples.
