Saiichi Maruya
Biography
Saiichi Maruya was born Saiichi Nemura in Tsuruoka in 1925. His father was a doctor with a large personal library which his son made full use of. After serving briefly in the Japanese army, at the end of the war, but not being engaged in any active service, he finished high school and then studied English literature at the University of Tokyo. He worked as a translator, translating Ulysses and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Joyce, naturally, became a big influence on his work. He taught English literature at university, before becoming a full-time novelist. He was also a literary critic and was very respected as a critic. He died in 2012.
