Biography

Alan Hollinghurst was born in 1954 in Stroud, Gloucestershire. His father was a architect and Hollinghurst planned to follow in his father’s footsteps. However, he read English at Magdalen College, Oxford University and then stayed on as a fellow, doing an M. Litt. Supported by John Fuller, also a fellow, he took up writing and it was Fuller’s press that published his first work, a book of poetry. After a brief spell as a lecturer at the University of London, he went to work for the Times Literary Supplement. He started writing novels, particularly with gay themes, and has continued a successful career as a novelist.
